Valley centre
The oldest and densest streets run along the valley floor beside the river, forming a narrow, elongated core that the rest of the town branches from.

Caratinga Map Poster & Print
Caratinga lies in the eastern part of Minas Gerais, in rolling, heavily folded country between the Rio Doce basin and the forested ranges toward Espírito Santo. There is very little flat land here, and the town has had to fit itself into the valleys it was given.
From above, that makes for an organic drawing. The central streets follow the valley floor and the course of the Caratinga River, while newer neighbourhoods climb the slopes on winding roads that switch back and branch into cul-de-sacs. Hilltops stay largely empty, so the built area looks like a network of fingers reaching into the hills.
Caratinga is the birthplace of Ziraldo, the cartoonist and author of O Menino Maluquinho, and the municipality includes a private forest reserve known for its population of northern muriqui monkeys. A Caratinga map poster keeps the focus on the town itself: a crowded valley centre, climbing streets and the pale shapes of hills between them.

Climbing neighbourhoods
Residential streets wind up the surrounding slopes in loops and switchbacks, producing the curling, uneven lines that distinguish a hill town from a grid city.
Green hilltops
Unbuilt ridges and hilltops remain as blank spaces between the neighbourhoods, giving the poster clear negative space and a sense of the landscape's shape.

Pourquoi Caratinga
Une carte qui a du sens
