Chake Chake is the chief town of Pemba, the greener and hillier northern island of the Zanzibar archipelago. It lies on the island's west side, near the head of a creek that reaches in from the Indian Ocean, and the outline of that inlet is one of the first things you see on a map of the town.
The town sits on higher ground above the water. Its streets follow the ridge, and lanes drop towards the shoreline and the mangroves.
