Chapecó is the main city of western Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil, and its layout is unusually regular for a hilly site. The centre was planned around a long, wide central avenue, and a grid of straight streets was laid over undulating terrain. On a map the blocks look disciplined, while the creeks and wooded ravines between neighbourhoods bend freely around them.
The city grew as a centre of agribusiness, and large meat-processing and food companies have deep roots here. It is also widely known through Chapecoense, its football club, whose players were among the victims of the 2016 air crash in Colombia; the tragedy drew worldwide sympathy and remains central to the city's identity.
