Sambre bends

La carte
Châtelet Map Poster & Print
Châtelet sits on the Sambre River just east of Charleroi, in the province of Hainaut. The river runs through the area in broad bends, and Châtelet's older centre sits on one bank, facing Châtelineau on the other. Streets cluster tightly near the river and bridges, then spread up the valley sides into terraced housing and later residential areas.
Like much of the Charleroi region, Châtelet grew with coal mining and heavy industry. On a map, that past shows in the railway lines and the large, irregular industrial sites along the valley floor, some of them now empty. Between these large parcels and the dense rows of workers' housing, the map has a strong, varied character that reflects a whole era of Belgian industry.
A Châtelet map poster centres on the Sambre and the bridges that link the two towns. The curving river, the rail corridors and the tight residential streets form a layered, graphic composition, well suited to a black-and-white style.

River bridges
Bridges cross the Sambre between the neighbouring towns. They mark the points where the two street networks meet.
Industrial valley
Railways and large former industrial sites line the valley floor. Their broad shapes contrast with the fine rows of terraced housing.

Pourquoi Châtelet
Une carte qui a du sens
Châtelet means something to families who worked in its mines and factories and to people who grew up on either side of the Sambre. A map of the town shows its real, working shape, and it makes a strong piece for a home or a gift.
Set a custom title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a family name, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits an industrial town well. Order HD files for $9 or a printed poster.
