Coventry Map Poster & Print
Coventry lies in the English Midlands, and its map is organised around one unmistakable shape: the inner ring road, a compact loop of dual carriageway, partly raised on flyovers, that encloses the city centre. Inside it the streets are short and closely packed; outside it radial roads run out towards Birmingham, Leicester, Warwick and the motorways beyond.
The centre was heavily bombed in November 1940, and its rebuilding produced one of Britain's first pedestrian shopping precincts. The ruined medieval cathedral of St Michael was kept as a memorial beside Basil Spence's new cathedral, consecrated in 1962. Three spires still mark the skyline, and fragments of the old street plan survive in the lanes around them.
Coventry is also the city of the Lady Godiva legend, a long-standing centre of car and cycle manufacturing, and UK City of Culture in 2021. Two cathedrals
The roofless ruins of the old cathedral and the modern cathedral beside it sit together near the heart of the ring, a small cluster that anchors the whole city-centre plan.
Coventry Canal
The canal ends in a basin just north of the centre and leaves the city as a thin, winding thread, a remnant of the industrial routes that once carried coal and goods.
