Lakefill campus
Northwestern's campus reaches out into Lake Michigan on reclaimed land. The shoreline swells at that point, and a lagoon is enclosed inside it.

Evanston Map Poster & Print
Evanston is the first suburb north of Chicago, and from above it reads as a continuation of the city's grid until the grid runs into Lake Michigan. The shoreline forms a long, clean eastern edge, softened by beaches and small parks. Inland, the blocks settle into regular rows of houses and tree-lined streets, broken only by rail lines running north and south.
Northwestern University occupies much of the lakefront. Part of its campus stands on land built out into the lake in the 1960s, so the shoreline bulges outward where the university meets the water, with a lagoon inside. The North Shore Channel, dug in the early twentieth century, cuts a straight line through the western side of the city, a contrast to the curved shoreline.
Evanston was also the long-time home of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and the city stayed dry for decades after Prohibition ended. Near its northern edge, the Grosse Point Lighthouse stands above the lake. An Evanston map poster sets the straight streets against the open water, which makes it one of the more graphic plans along the North Shore.

North Shore Channel
A man-made waterway runs straight through the western neighbourhoods, drawing a sharp diagonal-free line that splits the grid and carries a green strip of parkland along its banks.
Lakeshore edge
Beaches, parks and the lighthouse grounds line the eastern side, so the grid meets the water in one long boundary.

Pourquoi Evanston
Une carte qui a du sens
Students and alumni often want to remember the lakefront campus, and families who have lived in the leafy streets north of Chicago want to mark their neighbourhood. The shore and the grid make a strong outline that reads clearly from across a room.
Put a graduation year, a street name or a moving-in date in the title and subtitle, and adjust the coordinates line. Blueprint suits the lake and channel, and Noir or Classic black & white shows the grid most sharply.
