Galatina lies in the heart of the Salento peninsula, south of Lecce, in a landscape that is almost completely flat and covered with olive groves and low stone walls. From above, the historic centre is a compact, rounded core of narrow lanes, with newer districts and ring roads around it in looser, more regular blocks.
The town is best known for the Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, whose interior is covered in late-medieval frescoes. Galatina is also linked to tarantism, the Salento tradition of the tarantula's bite and its cure through music and dance, which centred on the chapel of Saint Paul. Locals also claim it as the birthplace of the pasticciotto pastry.
