Citadel on the rise
The old fortress stands on higher ground near the centre, and its outline is easy to pick out among the smaller walled plots and lanes around it.

Gardez Map Poster & Print
Gardez sits on a high plateau in eastern Afghanistan, and from above it reads as a tight cluster of streets set within a broad, open basin. Mountains frame the valley on several sides, so the built area looks small against the empty ground around it. Roads come in from the surrounding districts and meet near the centre, giving the plan a loose star shape.
The town is the capital of Paktia province and has long been a stopping point on routes between the Kabul region and the southeast. An old fortress on raised ground near the centre, known locally as the Bala Hissar, is the clearest single landmark. On the map its outline stands apart from the looser grain of the houses and compound walls around it.
A Gardez map poster works mostly with contrast. The dense core, the few main roads and the wide plateau beyond give the print a spare, almost diagrammatic look. Black lines hold the streets together and the large areas of white stand for open land. Seen this way, the town looks like what it has always been: a settlement at a meeting of highland roads.

Converging highland roads
Several regional roads approach from different directions and meet in the town, so the street plan radiates out from the centre toward the surrounding valleys.
Open plateau edges
Beyond the last streets the map goes quiet. Farmland and open plateau surround the town and leave generous white space around the dense centre.

Pourquoi Gardez
Une carte qui a du sens
For people with family roots in Paktia, or anyone who has lived or served here, the map shows the town as a whole, without distraction. The streets are plain, the core is clear and the setting is wide, which suits a quiet wall.
You can add your own title, a subtitle or a meaningful date to the poster, and change the coordinates line. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand suit the plateau setting especially well.
