Gozo Map Poster & Print
Gozo is the second island of the Maltese archipelago. It lies northwest of Malta across a short channel, with little Comino in between. On a map it is compact and rounded, crossed by flat-topped hills and valleys, with roads fanning out from the centre toward villages and coves. Each village forms its own cluster of streets around a church square, spaced across the island like points on a grid.
Victoria, also called Rabat, stands at the centre. Its fortified Citadel sits on a hill, and its walls are clearly outlined above the town. The ferry arrives at Mġarr on the southeast coast, where breakwaters shape a sheltered harbour basin. On the north coast, Ramla Bay opens as a wide curve of red-orange sand below the surrounding hills.
The Ġgantija temples at Xagħra are among the oldest free-standing monumental structures in the world, older than the pyramids of Giza. On the west coast, the Azure Window, a well-known rock arch, collapsed into the sea in 2017, but the cliffs at Dwejra are still striking. On the western edge, the Dwejra area combines an inland sea, sheer cliffs and a rocky islet. It is a cluster of intricate shapes where the Azure Window once stood.
