Gummidipundi lies in Tiruvallur district at the northern edge of Tamil Nadu, close to the border with Andhra Pradesh. It is the terminus of one of Chennai's suburban railway lines, and the national highway toward Kolkata passes nearby, so the town's shape follows these two long corridors. Streets gather around the station and the older market area, then spread out into newer housing and industrial land.
The town is known for its SIPCOT industrial estate, where factories occupy large planned plots on the outskirts. To the east lies Pulicat Lake, one of India's largest brackish-water lagoons, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a narrow barrier island. Between town and lagoon, the land is flat and dotted with fields, tanks and small villages.
