Most of the city lies on the level ground of the basin, where streets form a close, even network that fills the centre of the poster.

Hadano Map Poster & Print
Hadano occupies a basin in western Kanagawa, and from above the landform is easy to read. The Tanzawa mountains rise steeply to the north, lower hills close off the south, and the city fills the bowl between them. Streets spread across the flat floor in a dense, fine network, then thin out quickly where the slopes begin.
The Hadano basin is often described as the only basin in the prefecture. It holds large volumes of groundwater that rise as springs, and the local water is well regarded. Hadano was once known for tobacco growing. Today the Odakyu line runs through it toward Odawara, connecting the city with Tokyo and making it a base for hikers heading into the Tanzawa mountains.
A Hadano map poster works because the edges are so clear. The dense streets of the basin floor sit like a pool within the frame, the railway crosses it in a smooth curve, and mountain roads wind out into empty space at the top. The shape of this city is set almost entirely by its terrain.

Tanzawa slopes
To the north the mountains rise sharply, and the street grid gives way to a few winding roads that climb into forested valleys toward the hiking trails.
Odakyu line
The railway crosses the basin in a gentle curve, with stations at the heart of the main neighbourhoods, drawn as a steady line through the urban fabric.
