Oasis edge
Irrigated fields and shelter belts ring the built area, then stop abruptly at the desert. This sharp boundary makes the city's outline unusually clear.

Hami Map Poster & Print
Hami, also known as Kumul, sits at the eastern end of Xinjiang. For travellers crossing west from the Gansu corridor, it has long been the first oasis on the road. On a map the city is a compact grid set in open desert, with straight, wide streets. Irrigated fields and tree lines form a green fringe at its edges before the land turns to bare gravel plain.
To the north, the eastern ranges of the Tian Shan rise out of the basin, and meltwater from these mountains has sustained the oasis for centuries. The railway and the main highway between inner China and Ürümqi run through the city. They draw long, straight lines across the map that show how isolated the settlement is within its surroundings.
Hami is best known for the Hami melon, a sweet variety grown across the region and sold throughout China. It was also a stop on the Silk Road and the seat of a line of local rulers, whose mausoleums survive in the city. A Hami map poster captures the clean geometry of a desert city where every road and field edge is clearly defined.

Railway corridor
The line between inner China and Ürümqi crosses the city on a long, straight course and is one of the most prominent features on the map.
Wide planned streets
Broad avenues divide the city into large rectangular blocks, a typical pattern of modern Chinese town planning laid out on flat, open ground.

Pourquoi Hami
Une carte qui a du sens
Hami suits travellers who have followed the old Silk Road, people from Xinjiang who now live elsewhere and anyone drawn to the stark look of desert cities. The spare layout gives the print a calm, almost architectural quality.
Set a custom title, subtitle and coordinates line, for instance the city's name in another language alongside a date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand recalls the surrounding desert.
