Valley-floor layout
The town is stretched along the flat ground of a valley, so its streets form an elongated band, not a round centre, giving the poster a strong directional line.

La carte
Hanwang Map Poster & Print
Hanwang is a town in Gansu Province in north-western China, in the mountainous south of the province near the city of Longnan. This is steep, folded country, far from the dry plateaus that many people associate with Gansu, and settlement here tends to follow the valleys where the land is flat enough to build on. The ground around the town largely decides its shape.
From above, the map shows a settlement drawn out along a valley floor. The main road follows the line of the valley, and streets fill the flatter ground in a compact band. The pattern thins quickly where the hills begin. Smaller roads climb away into side valleys and up the slopes, leaving long, winding lines across otherwise empty space.
A Hanwang map poster shows clearly how landscape shapes a town. The composition is linear and directional, very different from the round or gridded plans of lowland cities. In a minimal black-and-white style, the dense strip of streets and the few threads leading into the mountains give the design a sense of scale and isolation.

Mountain roads
Minor roads wind out of the town into side valleys and up the slopes, drawing long, curving threads that contrast with the tight streets below.
Southern Gansu setting
Hanwang lies in the mountainous south of Gansu near Longnan, a region of steep, green terrain quite unlike the arid landscapes further north in the province.
