La carte
Hercules Map Poster & Print
Hercules is in Contra Costa County, California, on the southeastern shore of San Pablo Bay, the northern part of the San Francisco Bay system. From above, the city spreads over rolling hills that drop to the water. Residential streets curve along the contours, and large open spaces and ridgelines separate the neighbourhoods.
The city takes its name from the Hercules Powder Company, which made dynamite and other explosives on the waterfront for much of the twentieth century. The former industrial land along the bay has since been redeveloped, and newer streets now run close to the shoreline. Interstate 80 and the Highway 4 junction cut through the eastern side, dividing the town into distinct parts.
A Hercules map poster brings together bay, hills and highway. The smooth edge of San Pablo Bay runs along one side of the frame. Winding, contour-following streets fill the rest, and the freeway draws a firm line across it. In monochrome, the terrain shows mainly through the curves of its streets.

Contour-following streets
Hillside subdivisions follow the slopes in long curves and loops. They create an organic street pattern that looks especially fine in black and white.
Interstate 80 corridor
I-80 and its junction with Highway 4 cross the eastern side of the city. They form the strongest straight lines on the map.
