Coastal edge
The shoreline of the East Sea runs near the town. It gives the composition a clean boundary between land and water on its eastern side and a wide, calm area of open sea.

Hongwŏn Map Poster & Print
Hongwŏn is a county town in South Hamgyong Province on the eastern side of North Korea, near the coast of the Sea of Japan, known in Korea as the East Sea. The town sits on lowland between the sea and hills that rise inland. On a map its streets form a modest, fairly regular cluster within a landscape of fields and slopes.
Little is widely documented about Hongwŏn, so it is best understood through its geography. The built area is compact, with main roads running through it and on toward neighbouring settlements along the coast. Farmland fills the lowland around it. Higher ground inland brings curving roads and fewer lines, and the shoreline gives a firm edge on the seaward side.
A Hongwŏn map poster offers an unusual and restrained subject: a small coastal town drawn with the same care as any capital, its roads and blocks set against open land and the sea. It may interest people with family roots in the Hamgyong region, or collectors drawn to rarely mapped places on the Korean peninsula.

Compact centre
The town's streets form a small, fairly regular cluster. A few main roads pass through it and continue along the coast toward neighbouring settlements.
Lowland and hills
Farmland surrounds the town on the coastal lowland, and hills rise further inland. There the map becomes sparse and the landscape takes over from the street network.
