Ica lies in the coastal desert of southern Peru, in a green valley watered by the Ica River as it runs down from the Andes. On a map the city forms a fairly regular grid of blocks centred on its main plaza, with the river channel passing along its eastern side and irrigated fields pressing close against the outer neighbourhoods.
The valley is the heart of Peru's pisco and wine production, and vineyards and bodegas surround the city. Just south-west of the centre, sand dunes rise sharply around Huacachina, a small lagoon ringed by palms that has become one of the country's best-known desert landscapes. Further south lie the Nazca Lines, often visited on trips that start from here.
An Ica map poster shows a city defined by the boundary between water and dryness. The grid holds together tightly around the plaza, roads push out into agricultural plots, and at the edges the street network simply stops where the desert begins. The river runs through the valley along the eastern side of the city. Though often low or dry for much of the year, its course is clearly marked by the fields that follow it.
Huacachina
The small lagoon lies among high dunes a short distance from the city. On the map it is a compact ring of streets around water, surrounded by the smooth emptiness of the sand.
