Ilopango Map Poster & Print
Ilopango lies east of San Salvador, part of the continuous urban area that spreads across the valley around the capital. Its map is shaped above all by water: the western shore of Lake Ilopango, a large crater lake filling a volcanic caldera, forms one entire edge of the town. Streets climb the slopes above the lake, and the dense urban grid of the capital's eastern districts presses in from the west.
The caldera was formed by a massive eruption in the first millennium AD, one of the largest in Central America in recent history, which covered much of the surrounding region in ash. Today the lake is a place for recreation and fishing. The town is also home to the former international airport of El Salvador, whose runway remains one of the clearest straight lines on the map.
An Ilopango map poster brings together city and landscape in a single frame. The dense streets of greater San Salvador give way to steep, irregular slopes, and then to the broad smooth surface of the lake. In black and white, the empty expanse of water becomes a powerful negative space against the finely detailed neighbourhoods around it.

Airport runway
The long straight runway of the former international airport cuts across the urban fabric, one of the most striking lines on the sheet.
Lakeside slopes
Streets wind down the steep ground toward the water, bending around ravines and forming irregular patterns very different from the flatter city grid.

Pourquoi Ilopango
Une carte qui a du sens
