Indaial lies in the Vale do Itajaí in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, upstream from Blumenau. The Itajaí-Açu river winds through the municipality in broad bends. The town has grown along its banks and on the narrow flat land between the water and the surrounding hills. On a map the river is the dominant feature, drawing a long, sinuous line through the streets.
The region was settled largely by German and other European immigrants in the nineteenth century, and that heritage still shapes local culture across the valley. The town's layout follows the terrain rather than a fixed plan. Main roads trace the river, bridges connect the two banks, and residential streets climb into side valleys where the hills allow. Forested slopes enclose much of the built area.
