Ridge settlement
Houses and roads keep to the raised laterite ground, so the built-up pattern follows the ridge lines and leaves the valley floors mostly open.

Kāladi Map Poster & Print
This Kāladi sits in the Malappuram area of northern Kerala, not to be confused with the better-known Kalady on the Periyar further south. On the map it doesn't look like a compact town. It spreads out along roads through a rolling landscape of low laterite hills, with houses strung along the ridges and paddy land filling the lower ground. The pattern is typical of the Kerala midlands.
In black and white, the effect is that of a scattered settlement: roads branch in tree-like forms, lanes lead off to single houses, and the gaps between them are filled with fields and groves that appear as open space. There is no grid, and no single centre dominates. The map reads as a network of paths through the land.
A Kāladi map poster is less about landmarks than about pattern. It captures the way settlement in this part of Kerala follows the terrain, with homes on the dry ridges and rice on the wet valley floors. For anyone from the area, that fine web of lanes is the recognisable shape of home.

Branching lanes
Small lanes split off the main roads again and again, forming a delicate tree-like pattern that looks especially fine at larger print sizes.
Paddy hollows
Low, wet ground between the ridges is used for rice fields, and these empty spaces on the map give the composition room to breathe.

Pourquoi Kāladi
Une carte qui a du sens
Many families from Malappuram live and work far from home, in the Gulf and elsewhere, and a map of the lanes around the family house is a simple, personal thing to hang on the wall.
Put a family name in the title, a date in the subtitle or precise coordinates in the bottom line. Choose from five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, to fit a modern flat or a traditional home.
