Kashgar lies at the far western edge of China, in Xinjiang, where the Taklamakan Desert meets the foothills of the Pamir and Tian Shan ranges. For centuries it was a key junction on the Silk Road, where routes from China, Central Asia and South Asia converged, and the city still sits within a wide irrigated oasis surrounded by dry land.
The old town, centred on the Id Kah Mosque, is a compact maze of narrow lanes and courtyard houses, much of it rebuilt in recent years but still dense and irregular in plan. Around it, wide, straight avenues and newer districts extend in a clear grid, and the Tuman River runs along the edge of the historic core.
Kashgar's Sunday bazaar and livestock market have long drawn traders from the surrounding region, and the city is also the starting point of the Karakoram Highway toward Pakistan.
