Kidatu lies in Morogoro Region at the northern end of the Kilombero Valley, where flat, fertile lowland meets the edge of the Udzungwa Mountains. The map shows a small town organised around its roads and a railway, with settlements spreading out toward cultivated land. The Great Ruaha River passes nearby, and its course gives the surroundings a strong natural line.
Two large operations define the area. The Kidatu hydroelectric station on the Great Ruaha is one of Tanzania's important sources of power, and the Kilombero sugar estates cover much of the valley floor around the town. A Kidatu map poster captures the large, regular shapes of the cane fields beside the looser grain of the town and river.
The TAZARA railway between Dar es Salaam and Zambia passes through Kidatu, and on paper it draws a long, smooth curve across the landscape.
