Kŭlob is the main town of eastern Khatlon Province, set in a broad valley along the Yakhsu river in the south of Tajikistan. From above, the town forms a compact, mostly low-rise grid of streets and courtyards, surrounded by irrigated fields and orchards that stretch toward the hills. The valley floor gives it a flat, even centre with rougher ground at the edges.
It is one of the oldest settlements in the country, and in 2006 Tajikistan marked the town's 2,700th anniversary with celebrations and new public buildings. Its best-known monument is the mausoleum of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a fourteenth-century Persian scholar and Sufi who is honoured across Central and South Asia.
Water shapes the map in small ways, with the river and irrigation channels running quietly between residential quarters and farmland.
