Great Falls
At the heart of the twin cities the river narrows and drops, with bridges just above and below. This is the natural centre of the composition.

Lewiston Map Poster & Print
Lewiston stands on the east bank of the Androscoggin River in southern Maine, opposite its twin city, Auburn. The river drops over the Great Falls here, and that power made Lewiston one of New England's major textile centres in the nineteenth century. On the map, the river is the dominant line, bending past the city with bridges crossing to Auburn.
Near the falls, canals were cut to feed the mills, and their straight channels still run beside the long brick buildings of the old industrial district. Behind them, a grid of streets climbs towards the residential neighbourhoods. Bates College, a liberal arts college founded in 1855, has a green campus a short distance from downtown.
A Lewiston map poster shows a city built around water power and work: the river and falls, the ruled lines of the canals, the tight downtown and the open space of the campus and parks. In black and white, these layers read with unusual clarity and fit together like a diagram of the industrial age.

Mill canals
Straight canals run parallel to the river through the old mill district. Few small New England cities have such distinctive engineered features on their maps.
Bates College campus
A leafy campus of lawns and paths near downtown appears as a softer area in the grid, with a small pond at its edge.

Pourquoi Lewiston
Une carte qui a du sens
Lewiston matters to families of French-Canadian descent, to newer communities and to Bates graduates. A map of the falls, canals and campus is a way to remember a place that shaped their work, study or family life.
Add names, a graduation year or an address to the title and subtitle, and fine-tune the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy it as a $9 digital download or as a printed poster on matte paper.
