Planned centre
The colonial-era core is built on a clear grid with broad streets. On the poster it creates a strong, geometric middle that anchors the looser patterns around it.

Lichinga Map Poster
Lichinga is the capital of Niassa, Mozambique's largest and most sparsely populated province, and it sits on a high plateau east of Lake Niassa. The altitude gives it a cooler climate than much of the country. On a map the centre is laid out as a regular grid of wide streets and blocks, a pattern inherited from its colonial foundation.
Under Portuguese rule the town was called Vila Cabral, and it took its current name after independence. Around the planned core, newer neighbourhoods have grown more informally, with streets and paths spreading into surrounding farmland. The town is an administrative and trading centre for a vast region of forests, rivers and small villages, and a main road leads west down toward the lakeshore.
A Lichinga map poster shows the meeting point between planned and organic growth. The central grid appears as neat, evenly spaced lines, while the outer neighbourhoods dissolve into looser networks of tracks and plots. Framed with some space around it, the map conveys both the order of the town and the openness of the plateau beyond.

Growing outskirts
Beyond the centre, neighbourhoods have expanded in a less formal way, with paths and smaller streets branching out. These areas give the map its softer, organic edges.
Plateau setting
The town sits on high, open ground with farmland and woodland around it. At poster scale the sparse network of roads beyond the built-up area underlines its remote, elevated position.

Une carte qui a du sens
Lichinga holds meaning for people who grew up there, for development workers who spent years in Niassa, and for travellers who passed through on the way to the lake. A map of the town is a quiet, lasting reminder of a place that few others will know.
