Lichtenfels lies in the wide valley of the Main in Upper Franconia, and from above the river is the first thing you notice. It winds across a flat floodplain beside the town, accompanied by lakes left behind by gravel extraction, while the settlement gathers on slightly higher ground. The old core is small and dense, a knot of short streets within the line of its former walls.
The town is known across Germany as a centre of basket weaving, with a state school devoted to the craft and a basket market that fills the streets each September. On the valley slopes nearby stand two landmarks of the region, the pilgrimage basilica of Vierzehnheiligen and the former Banz Abbey, facing each other across the Main.
Lichtenfels is also a railway junction, and the tracks that split off in several directions give the map a crisp, almost diagrammatic quality.
