The long central square stands out as a clear open shape in the old town, the setting for the film festival's evening screenings under the sky.

La carte
Locarno Map Poster & Print
Locarno lies at the northern end of Lake Maggiore in the Swiss canton of Ticino, and its setting defines the map. The lake fills the lower part of the frame, the delta of the Maggia river pushes out into the water to the west, and the town climbs from the shore up toward terraced hillsides and the mountains of the Alpine foothills.
At the centre is the Piazza Grande, an elongated square that each August becomes an open-air cinema for the Locarno Film Festival. The older streets gather around it and the Castello Visconteo, while above the town the sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso stands on its rocky spur. In 1925 the Locarno Treaties were negotiated here.
A Locarno map poster shows how tightly the town is held between water and slope. Streets along the lakefront run level, those behind them bend with the contours, and the delta adds a broad fan of land that carries the town toward Ascona, making a composition with an unusual depth for a place of this size.

Maggia delta
The river's delta spreads into Lake Maggiore as a wide, rounded peninsula, dividing Locarno from Ascona and giving the shoreline its distinctive bulge.
Hillside above town
Roads zigzag up the slopes toward Madonna del Sasso and the villages above, a tight pattern of switchbacks that contrasts with the calm lake surface.

Pourquoi Locarno
Une carte qui a du sens
Locarno is a place people remember for summer evenings in the square, walks along the lake and the light over the mountains. A map keeps its setting precise rather than sentimental, and works well in a bright room.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the year of a festival visit, and choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Digital HD files are $9, and printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
