Illinois and Michigan Canal
The narrow historic canal passes along the edge of the old town. It is the reason Lockport exists and is still traceable as a thin line on the map.

Lockport Map Poster & Print
Lockport's map is shaped by water that has been engineered. The Des Plaines River, the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal and the much wider Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal run side by side through the valley. The old town sits on the bluff just above them, laid out in a grid that follows the valley's alignment.
The Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848 and linked Lake Michigan to the Mississippi system. Lockport served as the canal's headquarters, and the town takes its name from the locks built here. Parts of the original canal and its towpath survive, and a historic district preserves many of the older stone buildings from that period.
A Lockport map poster reads as a set of parallel lines: river, canal, ship channel and the railroad beside them, with the town's streets stepping away from the valley. It is an unusually linear, almost diagrammatic city plan, and it looks especially sharp in the Blueprint style.

Sanitary and Ship Canal
This broad, straight channel runs parallel to the river. It is one of the most striking features on the print, a clean band cutting across the valley.
The bluff-top grid
The historic centre sits above the valley on a regular street grid, looking down over the waterways that gave the town its role and its name.

Pourquoi Lockport
Une carte qui a du sens
Lockport appeals to people who grew up in Will County, to canal and industrial-history enthusiasts, and to anyone who enjoys a map where engineering shows so clearly. The parallel waterways make it one of the more graphic small-city plans in the Chicago region.
Add a personal title, a subtitle such as a year or an address, and your own coordinates line, then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The file or printed poster arrives ready to frame.
