It runs from the north bank of the Douro, close to where the river widens toward the Atlantic, up into residential streets inland. On a map the riverside road traces a gentle curve, and the neighbourhoods above mix old lanes with larger modern blocks.
The parish is home to the Serralves Foundation, with its contemporary art museum and extensive park, which appears on the map as a large green space among the streets.
