River mouth
The Manitowoc River winds through the city to the lake. Its bridges and bends break up the grid, and it becomes the harbour at the shore.

Manitowoc Map Poster & Print
Manitowoc is on the western shore of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Manitowoc River. On a map, the lake fills one whole side of the frame, and the river cuts through the city before reaching the harbour. Breakwaters and piers extend into the water, and the blocks along the lakefront follow the straight shoreline.
The city has a long shipbuilding history. During the Second World War, Manitowoc's yards built submarines that were floated down rivers to the Gulf of Mexico. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum stands near the river today. In summer, the SS Badger car ferry crosses the lake between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan.
A Manitowoc map poster pairs a firm Midwestern grid with the soft line of a river and the vast plain of the lake. The harbour and piers add sharp detail right where land meets water.

Harbour and piers
Breakwaters and piers reach out into Lake Michigan at the river mouth. They form precise geometric lines at the water's edge.
Lakefront grid
Streets run in an orderly grid right up to the shoreline. It sits square against the lake and gives the poster a strong sense of structure.
