Marlborough is one of the older inland towns in Massachusetts. It was settled in the 1650s and incorporated in 1660. On the map, its centre stretches along the historic east–west road that once carried travellers between Boston and the interior. The downtown has the long, linear shape of a place that grew along a route rather than around a square.
Water breaks up the street pattern in several places. Lakes and reservoirs sit within the city limits, and roads bend around their shores. On the western side, the interstate traces a long curve with wide interchanges. It marks the newer era of office parks and technology companies that joined the older mill and shoe-making town.
A Marlborough map poster shows both layers together. There is the irregular colonial core, with streets meeting at odd angles, and there are the tidy loops of later neighbourhoods. The town was burned during King Philip's War in 1676 and then rebuilt, so its oldest roads are among the few features that survived from its first decades.
