Wanale ridge
The ridge rises directly east of the town, and the streets stop where the cliffs begin, leaving that side of the map open and quiet.

Mbale Map Poster & Print
Mbale lies in eastern Uganda, within reach of the Kenyan border, at the western foot of Mount Elgon. On a map the town spreads across relatively level ground while the escarpment of the Wanale ridge rises sharply to the east, a steep wall with only a few roads climbing it. Streams run down from the mountain through the town and out onto the plain.
The centre has a compact grid of commercial streets, with markets, offices and the taxi park gathered close together, while residential districts extend outward along the main roads toward Tororo, Soroti and Kapchorwa. Mbale is also home to the Islamic University in Uganda, whose campus forms one of the larger institutional sites in town.
The slopes of Elgon around Mbale produce much of Uganda's Bugisu arabica coffee, and the Bamasaba people are known for the imbalu circumcision ceremony held in even-numbered years. A Mbale map poster brings the town and its mountain together in one frame, showing a regional centre shaped by the highland that dominates its horizon.

Town centre grid
The commercial core is laid out in short straight blocks, the densest and most regular part of the map, where the main regional roads meet.
Roads to the region
Highways leave Mbale toward Tororo, Soroti and Kapchorwa, drawing long lines out of the centre that make the town's role as a crossroads easy to read.

Pourquoi Mbale
Une carte qui a du sens
Mbale speaks to people from the Bugisu region, alumni of its university, coffee growers and travellers who set off from here to climb Elgon or visit Sipi Falls. Its meeting of plain and ridge gives a strong, legible composition.
