Mülheim an der Ruhr lies between Duisburg and Essen, and unlike many of its neighbours it is defined by its river more than by industry. The Ruhr crosses the city from south to north-west, dividing it into two halves joined by a handful of bridges. Near the centre the river splits around an island with a lock, a detail that looks almost drawn by hand.
The old town and main shopping streets sit on the right bank, while Schloss Broich, one of the oldest castle sites in the region, stands on the left. Much of the southern city is green: woods, riding paths and villas on the slopes above the river. Mülheim is also known as the home of Aldi Süd and of several Max Planck institutes.
A Mülheim map poster shows a city in balance. The curve of the Ruhr gives the composition its backbone, dense street patterns fill the north and centre, and the looser roads of the southern hills thin out into woodland. Southern slopes
South of the centre the street pattern loosens into curving roads, woodland and residential hillsides, giving the lower part of the poster a lighter, more open texture.
