La carte
Mường Lay Map Poster & Print
Mường Lay lies in Điện Biên Province in the mountainous far northwest of Vietnam, where the Đà River runs through deep valleys among high ridges. The town was once known as Lai Châu and was substantially relocated and rebuilt higher up the slopes when the reservoir of the Sơn La hydropower project raised the water level in the valley.
That history is visible on the map. Rather than a flat grid, streets follow contour lines along the hillsides, forming terraces of roads above a broad band of water. Bridges cross the reservoir and its arms, and mountain roads leave the town in long switchbacks toward other valleys of the northwest.
A Mường Lay map poster shows a settlement shaped by water and terrain. The widened river dominates the composition, with the town strung along its banks in narrow, winding bands. In monochrome, the result is both calm and dramatic, a reminder of how steep and remote this part of Vietnam remains.

Contour streets
Roads run along the hillsides in stacked curves, following the terrain rather than a grid and giving the town a layered appearance.
Relocated town
Much of the town was rebuilt on higher ground ahead of the reservoir filling, so its layout is relatively recent and adapted to the slopes.

Pourquoi Mường Lay
Une carte qui a du sens
For people from Mường Lay, especially those who remember the old town before the water rose, a map is a way to hold on to place and change at once. For travellers in Vietnam's northwest, it recalls mountain roads and river views.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the old name or a year, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. HD files for $9 include six sizes, each as a 300 DPI PNG and a print-ready PDF.
