Central street grid
The core of Musanze is laid out in a fairly regular pattern, unusual in hilly Rwanda, because the town sits on relatively level volcanic ground.

Musanze Map Poster & Print
Musanze, known until the mid-2000s as Ruhengeri, is the main town of Rwanda's Northern Province. It sits on a high plain at around 1,850 metres, formed by lava from the Virunga volcanoes that line the horizon to the north. The town itself is small and fairly regular, with a central grid of streets and a main road passing through on the way between Kigali and the border town of Rubavu.
Most visitors know Musanze as the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, where trekkers climb the slopes of the Virunga range to see mountain gorillas. The park headquarters at Kinigi lies a short drive away. East of town, lakes Burera and Ruhondo sit between steep ridges, and caves formed in old lava flows run beneath parts of the area.
The Musanze map poster has a simple centre and a dramatic frame. Streets gather in a neat pattern around the town core, farm tracks thin out across the plain, and at wider scales the roads toward the park begin to climb toward the volcanoes. It is a map that suggests a much bigger landscape waiting just beyond the edge of the print.

Road to the volcanoes
A road heads north from town toward Kinigi and the national park, the route most gorilla-trekking visitors take in the early morning before their climb.
Twin lakes to the east
Lakes Burera and Ruhondo lie a short distance away, long and irregular, separated by a narrow strip of land. At a wider scale they add striking solid shapes to the composition.

Pourquoi Musanze
Une carte qui a du sens
Travellers who came to Rwanda for the gorillas often want something more lasting than photos, and a map of the town where the trek began is a quiet way to mark it. It also suits anyone who lived, studied or worked in the north of the country.
Add a personalised title and subtitle, perhaps the date of a trek, and adjust the coordinates line. The five styles range from Classic black & white to the warmer Paper and Sand. Printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries, with an optional wooden frame.
