Open pit
The mine pit forms a large, rounded void on the map, ringed by terraces, haul roads and spoil areas that give the poster its most distinctive shape.

Mwadui Map Poster & Print
Mwadui, in the Shinyanga Region of northern Tanzania, grew around the Williamson diamond mine, opened after the geologist John Williamson found a kimberlite deposit here in 1940. It is one of the longest-running diamond mines in the world, and the town has always been shaped by it, with housing, services and roads laid out to serve the operation.
From above, the most striking feature is the mine itself, a large open pit surrounded by tailings, access roads and industrial ground. The residential areas are more regular than in many towns of the region, with planned streets and open spaces that reflect their origin as a company settlement rather than a village that grew slowly.
The mine is also remembered for a pink diamond presented to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding gift in 1947. A Mwadui map poster shows how an industrial landscape can become a strong graphic image, with the geometry of the pit and its haul roads set against the neat blocks of the town and the open plains beyond.

Planned town
Residential streets were laid out in a deliberate pattern of blocks and loops, a tidy counterpoint to the irregular industrial ground beside them.
Surrounding plains
Beyond the town and mine the land opens into flat country, leaving generous empty space around the edges of the composition.

Pourquoi Mwadui
Une carte qui a du sens
For people who worked at the mine, grew up in its staff housing or studied its geology, Mwadui is more than a name on a map. The poster's title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised with years of service, a family name or a short dedication.
Noir gives the pit and haul roads a dramatic, almost diagrammatic look, while Blueprint suits the engineering character of the site, and Classic black & white, Paper and Sand are also available. Order a matte print from partners in more than 30 countries, or download the $9 HD files with no watermark.
