La carte
Palmi Map Poster & Print
Palmi sits on a raised terrace above the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, looking out over the Gulf of Gioia. To the south the land climbs steeply to Monte Sant'Elia, and the shore below it is the Costa Viola, a stretch of cliffs and small coves. On the map, dense town, steep slope and open sea sit very close together.
After the earthquake of 1783 the town was rebuilt on a regular plan, and the grid is still clear in the centre, with straight streets and several squares. A Palmi map poster brings out that order and the winding roads that zigzag down to the beaches at Tonnara and around the headlands.
Palmi is known for the Varia, a huge devotional structure carried through the streets on the shoulders of hundreds of bearers. The festival is part of a group of Italian processions listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Costa Viola cliffs
South of town the coast turns steep and rocky, and the map shows how few roads can cling to this narrow strip between mountain and sea.
Roads to the sea
Hairpin roads drop from the town terrace down to the shore, drawing looping lines across the slope towards the beach and small harbour.

Pourquoi Palmi
Une carte qui a du sens
Palmi's map holds a lot in a small frame: a planned town, a mountain and a stretch of dramatic coast. It suits Calabrian families abroad, travellers who drove the Costa Viola, and anyone who loves southern Italian seaside towns.
Add a title, a subtitle such as a family name or the date of the Varia, and your chosen coordinates. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the files or order a print.
