Passa Quatro is in the south of Minas Gerais, near the borders with São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, high in the Serra da Mantiqueira. The town fills a valley along the Passa Quatro River, with streets arranged around a central square and church. Steep, wooded slopes rise on both sides, and the mountains shape almost every edge of the map.
The town's railway past is still part of its identity. A tourist train runs on the old line through the valley, and in the hills above, the Mantiqueira tunnel on the state border was the scene of fighting during the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932. The cool climate and trails of the Serra draw visitors from the nearby big cities.
