Pekin Map Poster & Print
Pekin lies in central Illinois on the east bank of the Illinois River, a few miles south of Peoria, and is the seat of Tazewell County. The river forms the western edge of the town. The downtown grid runs close to the water, with industrial areas and rail lines along the bank.
According to local tradition, the town was named after Peking, the old Western name for Beijing, in the belief that it lay directly opposite the Chinese city on the globe. Pekin was the home town of Everett Dirksen, the long-serving US senator, and the Dirksen Congressional Center is based here. Residential neighbourhoods spread east from downtown across flat, regular blocks.
A Pekin map poster sets the broad river and its floodplain against the ordered geometry of a Midwestern town. A bridge and rail lines cross the water on the west side, while the streets spread east in a steady grid. It is a clear, grounded picture of a river community in the middle of Illinois.

Downtown grid
The historic centre sits close to the river in a tight rectangular grid, with the county courthouse at its core and the main streets leading inland.
Riverside industry
Rail lines and industrial sites follow the bank, drawn in long straight strokes. They record the town's history as a working river town and manufacturing centre.
