The broad curve of the bay forms the western edge of the town, a large open area on the poster that sets off the compact streets along the shore.

Penco Map Poster & Print
Penco lies on the eastern shore of the Bay of Concepción in Chile's Biobío Region. From above, the town is a long, narrow strip: streets run parallel to the beach, pressed between the calm water of the bay and a line of hills that climbs steeply inland. The coastline gives every map of Penco a strong curved edge along one side.
The town holds a notable place in Chilean history. Concepción was first founded here in 1550, and after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in 1751 the city was relocated to its present site further south. Penco kept its identity as a separate town, and today it sits within the greater Concepción area, linked by the coastal road and railway.
A Penco map poster brings together the few elements that define the place: the sweep of the bay, the grid squeezed onto the flat coastal strip and the darker, emptier ground of the hills. It is a simple, legible composition, well suited to a black-and-white treatment in which the water becomes a clean open field.

Coastal strip
Most of Penco is built on a narrow band of flat land, so its streets form a long, slim grid running parallel to the waterline.
Hills behind town
Steep, wooded slopes rise just inland, stopping the urban area abruptly and leaving a quiet band of open space along the landward side of the map.
