Rakovník lies west of Prague in Central Bohemia, in a gently rolling landscape long known for growing hops. From above, the town's historic centre is easy to pick out: a compact, oval core of streets and squares. Later districts surround it, spreading along the valley of the local stream and up the slopes on either side.
The old town preserves two of its medieval gates, the Prague Gate and the High Gate, which still mark the line of the former fortifications. Around them, the dense pattern of burgher houses and narrow lanes gives way to a looser layout of villas, housing estates and industrial areas.
The town is also associated with brewing and with the manufacture of ceramic tiles, industries that have left their mark on its outskirts.
