Râşnov lies in Brașov County in Transylvania, where the Bârsa plain meets the foothills of the Southern Carpathians. Its best-known landmark is Râșnov Citadel, a medieval fortress on a rocky hill above the town. The citadel was built by local people as a refuge during invasions. Bran Castle is a short drive further along the same road.
On a map the old centre sits at the foot of the citadel hill. Its streets are laid out in the rows of houses with long back gardens found in Saxon towns of the region. Newer neighbourhoods spread out onto the flatter land. To the south, the forested slopes of the mountains rise quickly, and roads wind up into the valleys. A ski jump near the town has hosted international competitions.
