Rijswijk lies directly against the southeastern edge of The Hague, joined so closely that the boundary is hard to spot on a map. What sets it apart is its structure. A small historic village core near the old church is surrounded by residential districts planned mostly after the Second World War, each with its own pattern of streets, green strips and water.
Water frames the town in typical Dutch fashion. The Vliet, an old canal linking Leiden, The Hague and Delft, runs along the eastern side, while smaller watercourses and ponds thread through the neighbourhoods. Parks and country estates, some of them centuries old, leave wide green areas that break up the density of the housing.
