Rocklin Map Poster & Print
Rocklin lies in Placer County, northeast of Sacramento, where the flat Central Valley starts to lift into the Sierra Nevada foothills. On a map it looks quite different from an old downtown grid. A small straight-lined core near the railway gives way to wide arcs of residential streets, looping drives and cul-de-sacs laid out over rolling ground.
The city takes its name from the granite quarries that supplied stone in the nineteenth century, and old quarry sites still mark the centre of town. Interstate 80 crosses the city diagonally and State Route 65 runs along its western side, and between them large planned neighbourhoods spread north and west. Sierra College and William Jessup University are both based here.
A Rocklin map poster turns this newer kind of city into a clear pattern. Freeway lines provide the structure, the older blocks around the railway form a small rectilinear centre, and the curving subdivisions fill the rest of the frame with a soft, almost organic texture that comes out well in black and white.

Quarry-town core
Near the railway the streets straighten into a small grid, the old centre of a place that grew up around granite quarrying and the rail line.
Looping subdivisions
Across the rest of the city, curving collector roads and cul-de-sacs follow the rolling foothill ground, making dense patterns that look almost like fingerprints from above.

Pourquoi Rocklin
Une carte qui a du sens
