The town stretches along a valley, with the Ronyva stream forming the frontier on its eastern side. Across the border is Slovenské Nové Mesto, once part of the same town. Hills rise steeply to the west and north.
The Magas-hegy, above the town, is known for its chairlift, bobsled track and adventure park. The town also has deep historical ties to Hungarian culture: Lajos Kossuth worked here as a young lawyer, and Széphalom, now part of Sátoraljaújhely, was the home of the language reformer Ferenc Kazinczy.
