Sömmerda Map Poster & Print
Sömmerda lies on the Unstrut river in the Thuringian Basin, north of Erfurt, and is the seat of the district of the same name. From above, the old town is a compact oval of irregular streets, and parts of its medieval fortifications still stand, including the Erfurter Tor gate. Beyond the centre, residential and industrial districts spread out toward the river meadows and the open farmland of the basin.
The town's modern history is industrial. In the nineteenth century Nikolaus von Dreyse built his works here and developed the needle gun, a breech-loading rifle later adopted by the Prussian army. In the GDR era Sömmerda was known for office machines and computers produced by the Robotron combine, which shaped the large factory sites and housing estates on the map.
A Sömmerda map poster shows both layers at once: the tight medieval core with its curving lanes, and the broad, regular blocks of the later industrial town. The Unstrut runs past as a calm line through flat country, and the roads leading out toward Erfurt and the surrounding villages lie like spokes around the centre.

The Unstrut runs through the flat basin beside the town. Its gentle bends and the open meadows along it give the composition a soft, horizontal counterweight to the streets.
Industrial districts
Large rectangular sites and housing estates from the town's manufacturing era surround the centre. They show how Sömmerda grew around the Dreyse works and, later, around Robotron.
