Suruga Bay shore
The coastline runs along one side of the map as a long, smooth curve. It forms a strong boundary that gives the dense inland street pattern a clean frame.

Sumiyoshi Map Poster & Print
Sumiyoshi lies on the flat coastal plain of central Shizuoka Prefecture, close to the shore of Suruga Bay on Japan's Pacific side. Like much of this coast, it is a place of low ground and wide skies, where houses, workshops and farm plots share the land. On a map the built-up area appears as a fine mesh of narrow streets set among larger rectangles of cultivated fields.
Shizuoka is best known in Japan for green tea, and the plateaus inland from this stretch of coast are among the country's main tea-growing areas. Rivers flowing down from the mountains cross the plain on their way to the bay, and their broad channels, together with the line of the coast, give the landscape its main structure.
A Sumiyoshi map poster shows the order typical of Japanese provincial towns: small blocks, lanes just wide enough for a car, and a clear division between houses and fields. Printed in black and white, the texture resembles a finely woven cloth, with the coastline and the rivers providing a few decisive lines.

Fine street mesh
Narrow residential lanes form a tight, irregular mesh typical of Japanese towns. The detail rewards larger print sizes, and the texture is remarkably even across the sheet.
Rivers and fields
Broad river channels and rectangular farm plots cut across the plain. Their open shapes balance the density of the settled areas and give the eye places to rest.
