Tākestān lies on the broad plateau west of Qazvin, along the main road and railway that link Tehran with northwestern Iran. The town has a relatively compact centre with a mixture of older, irregular lanes and newer straight streets, and it is surrounded by a wide belt of vineyards and gardens that softens its edges on the map.
The town has long been known for its grapes, and the raisins produced here are sold across Iran. A Tākestān map poster shows these vineyards as a finely divided landscape of plots and lanes around the built-up area, a pattern that gives the town a distinctive setting on an otherwise open plain.
