Silindung valley floor
The town occupies a flat basin between ridges, so its streets form a long, narrow cluster that follows the valley rather than spreading evenly in every direction.

La carte
Tarutung Map Poster & Print
Tarutung lies in the Silindung valley in the highlands of North Sumatra, a flat-floored basin enclosed by steep, forested slopes. It is the administrative centre of North Tapanuli Regency. From above, the built-up area is a narrow band along the valley floor, with rice fields filling the flat ground and roads climbing out toward the surrounding ridges.
The valley has a long association with Batak Christianity. The German missionary Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen worked in the Silindung area in the nineteenth century, and a hilltop cross monument known as Salib Kasih commemorates that history above the town. Churches appear frequently among the town's buildings, a detail that reflects the character of the region.
A Tarutung map poster shows a settlement shaped entirely by terrain. The main roads run lengthwise with the valley, side streets are short, and the edges of town soften into paddies rather than ending at a ring road. It is a modest, legible pattern, well suited to a minimalist print.

River through town
A river runs along the valley and through the settled area, a thin sinuous line that the main streets roughly track from one end of town to the other.
Roads into the hills
Routes leave the valley in winding curves as they climb toward neighbouring highland districts, giving the edges of the map a looser, more organic texture.
