La carte
Tokmak Map Poster & Print
Tokmak is in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine, in flat, open steppe country. The Molochna River runs through the area, and the town grew up along its valley. On the map, the soft curve of the river cuts across a mostly rectilinear street plan, which is the main visual feature of the place.
The street network is broad and orderly. Long, straight streets and wide blocks are typical of towns on the southern steppe, where there was plenty of flat land for building. Railway lines and regional roads lead out in several directions, and past the last houses the map opens into large field rectangles.
A Tokmak map poster shows the plain geometry of a steppe town and the one natural line that interrupts it. The river valley, the grid and the fields beyond together give a clear picture of the land. For people from the town, the poster can hold a place they know well, however far away they now live.

A steppe street grid
Long, straight streets and wide blocks cover the level ground. The layout is typical of towns built on the open southern Ukrainian plain.
Fields to the horizon
Beyond the town, the map breaks into large agricultural parcels. Their straight boundaries continue the geometry of the streets out into the steppe.
