Excavated harbour
The port basins were dug inland from a straight sandy coast, and their sharp rectangular shapes are the most striking feature on the map.

La carte
Tomakomai Map Poster & Print
Tomakomai stretches for many kilometres along the Pacific coast of southern Hokkaido. The shoreline is almost straight, and the city forms a long, narrow band between the sea and the forests and wetlands inland. Streets follow a broad grid oriented along the coast, typical of Hokkaido cities planned in the modern period, with wide roads and large blocks.
The port is the city's main industry. Tomakomai's western harbour was excavated inland from a sandy coast that had no natural harbour, and it became one of Japan's first major dug-out ports. On the map, its basins and quays cut sharply into the land. The city is also known for its long-established paper industry, whose mill sits close to the centre.
A Tomakomai map poster shows the coast as a single strong line with the harbour cutting into it. To the east lies Lake Utonai, a wetland known for migrating birds, and to the northwest rises the volcanic Mount Tarumae. The city between them is orderly and horizontal, a clear composition of sea, grid and open land.

Coastal grid
Wide roads and large blocks run parallel to the shore, stretching the city into a long band rather than a compact centre.
Lake Utonai
East of the city, this shallow lake and its surrounding marsh form a soft, irregular shape, a well-known stopover for migrating birds.

Pourquoi Tomakomai
Une carte qui a du sens
Tomakomai means something to port and mill workers, to birdwatchers who know Lake Utonai, and to people who grew up on Hokkaido's southern coast. The straight shore and harbour shapes make a strong, graphic print.
